First Christmas – Premier Noël

 

 

Cela fait maintenant deux mois qu'Erwin est à la maison, et elle se porte à merveille. Elle pèse 3,4 kg, et continue à prendre du poids. Ses joues se sont arrondies et des petits bourrelets commencent à apparaître un petit peu partout. Elle tète sans arrêt pendant la journée, et toutes les 4-5 heures la nuit. Elle dort beaucoup en ce moment, mais lorsqu'elle est éveillée, elle gigote dans tout les sens et fait de magnifiques sourires à ses parents.

D'un point de vue médical, son état de santé est excellent. Lors de son séjour à l'hôpital Erwin a eu un début de rétinopathie du prématuré (développement anormal des vaisseaux sanguins de l'œil qui peuvent engendrer le décollement de la rétine). Cependant, lors d'une visite médicale après son retour à la maison, le spécialiste nous a annoncé que ses yeux allaient très bien et qu'elle n'aurait pas de problèmes de la vue. Une échographie abdominale nous a montré une vessie et des reins tout à fait normaux. De plus, la manière dont elle nous regarde et observe le monde qui l'entoure montre qu'elle se porte très bien.

Les visites hebdomadaires chez la consultante en lactation sont maintenant terminées. Ces visites nous ont permis d'une part de suivre la prise de poids d'Erwin et d'autre part d'aider Chenoa à allaiter, ce qui n'est pas toujours facile avec un si petit bébé.

Erwin attire beaucoup l'attention lorsque nous sommes en ville. Elle est petite, mais elle peut voir beaucoup plus loin qu'un bébé du même âge corrigé ( cinq semaines), ce qui lui donne un aspect très mature. De plus, elle arrive bien à tenir sa tête toute seule. Il faut dire que les habits qu'elle porte attirent aussi l'attention. (Les photos en diront plus long que les mots).

Nous profitons d'un Noël très tranquille à la maison avec la mère de Chenoa, qui s'occupe beaucoup d'Erwin et nous permet de bien nous reposer. Ensuite le temps viendra de se remettre au travail sur nos thèses respectives. Pour Sylvain, un poste d'économiste l'attend au gouvernement fédéral après la soutenance de thèse. C'est très rassurant de ne pas avoir à se soucier de trouver un emploi et de pouvoir profiter au maximum de chaque instant passé avec un bébé si merveilleux.

Erwin has been enjoying life at home for over two months, and has been packing on the pounds. She now weighs 3.4kg (7lb 7oz) and is in the middle of a growth spirt. Her cheeks are round and rosy and she has little fat folds popping up everywhere. She has been nursing non stop during the day and every 4-5 hours at night (respite!). She is very sleepy (growing takes lots of energy), but when she does wake up, she wiggles and jumps all over, often charming her parents with gorgeous smiles.

Erwin's weekly visits to the lactation consultant have come to an end. She has finally come into her full nursing potential and does not have any problems in the growing department—a big step forward for a baby who got her first meal of 1 ml (1/4 tsp) through a nasal-gastric tube!

We went to visit the nurses at the NICU after our last visit to the lactation clinic, and they took her off our hands and carried her all around the unit to see everyone who had taken care of her for her first two-and-a-half months. The whole crew enjoys seeing how their little charges do after they go home, because they usually never see them again.

Whenever we go into town, Erwin attracts a lot of attention. She is so small, but so alert and strong. She can see quite far for a 5 week old (adjusted age), which gives her a more mature air. She also holds her head up steadily and looks about intently while wearing one or another of the cute outfits that she has received from friends and family.

We have been enoying a very peaceful Christmas with Grandma Theo who spends a lot of time cuddling and playing with her first granddaughter. She has also knitted an elf ensemble for the littlest member of the family. Erwin has embrased the festive spirit full heartedly.

After this holiday respite, it will be back to getting those stubborn theses finished, and then off to work for Sylvain, who has landed himself a job with Industry Canada as an economist. Everyone feels a little more relaxed knowing that the future is certain, allowing us to make the most of the time we have together before the Monday to Friday routine takes over.
